Okay, I'm a sheltered person. I live in the most liberal, 85% Jewish (I'm not Jewish) etc. city you can imagine...
so I go onto Livewire and get a fresh vat of "You choose to be a fag" "If I had the chance I'd kill every gay person"

Iactually have a friend who's bi but she thinks there's something wrong with her.
How can you reason?

I mean... by the time you're an adolescent these thoughts are ingrained.. but.. .but.... no hope at all?

My mom, a homophobe, tried to convince me that being gay was wrong. I was like 3. I thougth that marrying someone of the same sex was weird... for about a minute.

EDIT>>Agreed, I sound whiny and yeah I should deal. But I want people to become accepting because it'll help them in all aspects of life.

Tolerance for other people's actions that don't affect them negatively - good.

I don't think there's that much homophobia on LW...

This topic only reminded me that I think the accusation of "homophobia" is thrown around too loosely.  If you have something bad to say about homosexuals or homosexuality, it doesn't automatically make you a homophobe.

Alex's opinion - No matter what people's opinion of homosexuality is, a public forum (where there are people of all types) is not a place to voice your negative thoughts. I believe in free expression of opinion but insulting others is not how you go about it. I much prefer civilized debate on the topic as this is constructive and good for the mind.

I think homophobia is the visible effect of heterophobia.

Actually, I just like the term heterophobia.  Some Immortal Technique song mentioned that and got me thinking, can't remember for the life of me.

But yeah.  People are too homophobic.  I live in San Francisco, fucking San Francisco, and people HERE are homophobic, though mostly in a joking and apparently not-meant-to-be-hurtful way.  It's mostly the teenaged asians who are hella insecure about their sexuality anyway, though.

Homophones?

Really?

No?

Ohh thats better.

Sorry thought the post said homophones... It's really late here.

Anyway welcome to broadening your cultural exposure.  People think different than from your home area.

I can't say that I agree but I enjoy conflict and you, my friend, are going about it the right way!

Man, STFU, and stop complaining.

People are homophobes for a damn reason, and they have strong passion for that.

Homophobes are here because gay supporters are here, just like Jessie Jackson exists because racism exists.

For every force, there must be an equal and opposite reaction.  So, since many people actively support gay rights, then a lot of people must also actively deny them.

You following?

Since we all have freedoms, everyone must have an opinion, and it's not fair to say that you dislike someone purely because he or she holds an opinion.  Instead, we must all calmly explain our own opinions and come to a compromise or conclusion.  Homophobia exists in men and women alike for a number of reasons, just as GLBT allies feel that way for a number of reasons.

If we all just assume that the other is wrong without considering both sides of the story, then this world will never be able to grow.

You have to just learn to ignore them. Really, you're in a position they'll never find themselves in: you're attracted to your own sex. You know you didn't (at least intentionally) cause it and no one quite knows the cause, and sometimes it sucks when you have idiots who have never had to experience what you're experiencing judging you.

Just remember that you're really the one with the moral high ground, because if they were in your position they could either 1) do exactly what you're doing and stay true to themselves or 2) live their lives in denial of who they are and basically live as cowards. (in my personal opinion).

People often use their religion just to ward off things they're not familiar with or fearful of, and try to idealize their lifestyle as the 'commonplace' 'normal' or 'purest' way of living. Most homophobes I know really aren't deep into religion, but just use it as an excuse to pick on gays. After all of the emotional shit I've been through and seen other gay kids go through (usually mid teens) in the name of 'purity' and religion if I were god I'd be very disappointed.

What? "You know those people who disagree with our choices? Yeah, they're all wrong. All of them. Also they're stupid cowards."

Just because your horse is high doesn't make it moral, you condescending fuck.

You obviously don't know how to read b/c thats not what I said. And it's not a choice which makes you response irrelevant to what we're talking about.

I paraphrased it, you jackass. That's how it reads.

You can't fucking claim that one position has an inherent moral superiority. That's not how anything works.

Don't arbitrarily nuke European and South American concentrations of civilians vs. do arbitrarily nuke European and South American concentrations of civilians. I see an inherent moral superiority in one position. Where am I going wrong?
